Mrs. Johanna Vermeer, age 85, of Sheldon, formerly of Boyden, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2016, at the Good Samaritan Society in Le Mars.

There will be a funeral service on Wednesday, September 28, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Boyden. The Rev. David Poppen will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Sheridan Township Cemetery near Boyden. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Johanna Hendrene was born on March 24, 1931, in Randolph, Wisconsin, the daughter of Peter and Jessie (Kok) Vanderson. She was raised in Randolph, where she graduated from Randolph Christian High School. She attended Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and then taught in Grand Rapids for two years.

On June 19, 1953, she married Edgar Gerrit Vermeer in Randolph. They made their home on a farm southwest of Boyden, where she was a homemaker. Edgar passed away on October 1, 1977, at Boyden.

Mrs. Vermeer moved into Boyden in 1981, and in 2008, she moved to Fieldcrest Assisted Living in Sheldon. She lived at the Good Samaritan Society for the past seven weeks.

She was a member of the First Reformed Church in Boyden where she was active in Reformed Church Women’s Ministries and taught Sunday school and catechism classes. In addition, she was a member of the William Monster American Legion Post Auxiliary in Boyden and served as a 4-H leader for many years.

“Jo” enjoyed sewing, crocheting, reading, entertaining, and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She volunteered for many things, including checking Bible study tests for Crossroad Prison Ministries in Sioux Falls, South Dakota (10 years), working at the Village Treasure Chest at Village Northwest in Sheldon (25 years), and reading to other residents of Fieldcrest. She also enjoyed singing for many years with the Senior Saints.

Survivors include her six children, Donald Vermeer, and his wife, Cindy, of Dallas, Texas; Robert Vermeer, and his wife, Mary Lou, of St. John, Indiana; Steven Vermeer, and his wife, Karen, of Boyden; Judy Te Grootenhuis, of Orange City; Patty, and her husband, Dan Willadsen, of Jewell; and Susan, and her husband, Greg Ringling, of Sioux City; sixteen grandchildren, Jessica (Walter) Crespi, Eric (Sarah) Vermeer, Rebecca (Daniel) Overway, David (Jessica) Vermeer, Mary Jo (Dan) Terpstra, Michael (Beth) Vermeer, Lori (Jim) Hoogendorn, Jonathan (Katelyn) Vermeer, Michelle Vermeer, Tiffany (Mike) Van Roekel, Brandi Te Grootenhuis, Kiefer Te Grootenhuis, Emily Willadsen, Clay Willadsen, Shane Ringling, and Alexa Ringling; 24 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Bertha Vermeer, of Windom, Minnesota; and Marjorie Chassels, of Highland, Illinois; and a brother-in-law, Casey Smit, of Sheldon.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and her husband, Connie and John Smedema; her parents-in-law, John and Martha Vermeer; a sister-in-law, Luella Smit; and a brother-in-law, Harvey Vermeer.

Memorials may be directed to the Boyden Reformed Church Womens Ministries or the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
