De Vos, Cornie 1927-2016

Mr. Cornie De Vos, age 88, of Hull, passed away on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, at Sioux Center Health.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, September 24, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Kevin Yurk will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Cornie was born on December 6, 1927, near Carmel, in Plato Township, the son of William C. and Berendina “Dena” (Van Der Weide) De Vos. He was raised in Sioux County and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict, stationed in Alaska.

On January 23, 1951, he married Elizabeth Lenore Dykstra at the First Reformed Church in Hull. They first farmed west of Sioux Center. In 1954, they moved to their farm northwest of Hull. They moved into Hull in 1995, but he continued to be active on the farm, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Mr. De Vos was a member of the First Reformed Church and the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post in Hull.

He liked bowling, attending farm sales, gardening, especially tomatoes and rhubarb, and playing cards.
Survivors include his wife of more than 65 years; five children, Dennis Jay De Vos, and his wife, Katherine Van Houten, of San Francisco, California; Glenda Kay, and her husband, David Skallerud, of Iowa City; Leanne Beth De Vos, and her husband, Mark Tidd, of Denver, Colorado; Lyle Evan De Vos, and his wife, Ronna, of Hull; and Daryl Lee De Vos, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; eleven grandchildren, Brett De Vos; Matthew, Kelly, and Michael Skallerud; Emma De Vos Tidd; Jeramy, Colin, and Parker De Vos; and Megan, Morgan, and Brooke De Vos; a sister and her husband, Wilma and Harold Kuiken, of Sioux Center; a brother and his wife, Harold and Sharon De Vos, of Rock Rapids; and two sisters-in-law, Henrietta “Henny” Dykstra, of Hull; and Marlene, and her husband, Clarence Van’t Hul, of Canton, South Dakota.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a very special daughter-in-law, Peggy De Vos; two sisters and their husbands, Dorothy and Sam Klein and Nellie and Hilbert De Weerd; a brother and his wife, Clarence and June De Vos; and three brothers-in-law, Joel Dykstra, and his wife, Tracy; Donald Dykstra, and his wife, Anna Mae; and Leroy Dykstra.
