Larry Dean was born on September 2, 1941, in Orange City, the son of Joe C. and Bertha (Hofmeyer) Kleinhesselink. He was raised mostly in the Boyden area and attended the Newkirk School.

On January 16, 1959, he married Audrey Joan Noteboom in the parsonage of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. They lived in several places in northwest Iowa. Since 1978, they have made their home in Alton.

After settling in Alton, Larry worked a variety of jobs until becoming a plant manager at a large construction company during the 1980’s. He also was an over-the-road truck driver. His work took him and the family to Colorado for parts of the year. He enjoyed those years very much. He transitioned in the 1990’s to being a traveling leather salesman and soon became an expert in the trade. More recently, he spent a majority of his time around the house in Alton with his wife Audrey and dog Chico.

Larry enjoyed raising all kinds of animals through the years, however, horses were his favorite. He loved to ride horses in the Colorado Rockies with friends and family. He was a very intelligent and funny man, who loved to educate his family about old western movies. He loved to tell them stories about his escapades and the friends and characters he met along the way. He enjoyed playing cards and games with his family, watching television, fishing, practical jokes, and making his family laugh by recording his very own comedy tapes. He truly was one-of-a-kind and will be missed greatly by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Survivors include Audrey, his wife of more than 57 years; a daughter, Tammy Anderson, of Alton, and her children, Trevor, and his wife, Kari, and their children, Annie and Mason; and Alyssa, and her fiancé, Matt; a son and his wife, Loren and Teri Klein, of Ankeny, and their children, Megan and Jordan; a son and his wife, Mike and Rachel Kleinhesselink, of Sheldon, and their sons, Travis, and his fiancé, Katie, Dillon, Marshall, and Kamron; a daughter-in-law, Bonnie Kleinhesselink, of Sergeant Bluff, and her children, Mitchell, and his fiancé, Brittany; Britney, and her husband, Billy, and Wyatt; a son-in-law, Dan Meharg, of Madison, New Jersey, and his daughters, Olivia and Maya; a son and his wife, Jesse and Kristi Kleinhesselink, of Alton, and their children, Austin, Chloe, and Riley; his mother, Bertha Kleinhesselink, of Hull; and a brother and his wife, Chuck and Jean Kleinhesselink, of Everson, Washington.

He was preceded in death by two children, Matthew Kleinhesselink and Kelly Meharg; his father, Joe C. Kleinhesselink; a sister and her husband, Jolene and Joe Espy; and Audrey’s parents, Arie and Harriet Noteboom.

Memorials may be directed to the church.
