Howard Hop, age 92, of Orange City passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, September 10, at 11:00 am at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a prayer service on Saturday at 10:00 am at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be at the funeral home after 4:00 pm on Friday with the family present from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.

Howard was born on April 5, 1924, the son of Jake H. and Elizabeth (Veenstra) Hop. He was raised on a farm southwest of Orange City and as a teenager, his family moved to Alton. He graduated from Alton High School in 1942. As a member of the Army Corps of Engineers from 1943 to 1946, he served in Europe during World War II.

On June 3, 1949, Howard married Joyce Muyskens at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City. In 1952, he began his engineering career at the Sioux County Engineers Office, eventually becoming Assistant County Engineer. He retired in 1989. In 2012, he and Joyce became residents of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. Joyce passed away on September 26, 2014.

Howard was an active member of the First Reformed Church, where he enjoyed serving on the consistory as a deacon and an elder. He also sang in the church choir and with a men’s group who entertained at local care facilities. In addition, he belonged to the Western Camp of Gideons International and the Pressman-Kosters American Legion Post in Orange City.

The couple enjoyed camping, went on many of the Pride of the Dutchmen Band trips and during retirement frequently traveled to California and Arizona. When not traveling, Howard often volunteered his services doing things like manning voting stations on election days, donating blood, and delivering church bulletins to fellow residents at Landsmeer.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Karen and Randy VanDerMaaten, of Orange City; three sons, Roger Hop, and his wife, Debra, of Ames; Rick Hop, of Alton; and Rod Hop, of Orange City; seven grandchildren: Julie (Kevin) Lors, Jenny (Ryan) Simmelink, Josh (Rachel) VanDerMaaten, Schuyler Hop, Lindsay Hop, Danielle Hop, and Noah Hop; seven great-grandchildren; a brother Don (Marlys) Hop of Orange City; and two sisters-in-law: Margaret Hop of Le Mars and Sharon Rose Vander Schaaf of Orange City.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Julius Hop; three sisters, Artie Hop; Ruby, and her husband, Marion De Vries; and Nelvina Hop, in infancy; and two brothers-in-law, Ken Muyskens and his wife, Doris; and Wayne Vander Schaaf.
