Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Leroy Clifford was born on December 7, 1948, at Alton, the son of Herman and Margaret (Miller) Schwarz. He was raised in Alton and served in the United States Army at Fort Hood, Texas, from 1970 to 1972.

On October 18, 1974, he married Judy Vander Vegte, and they made their home in Alton. He was employed at the Alton Rendering Plant for 42 years, until he was forced to retire in 2011 due to his health.

He was a member of the Alton Reformed Church, where he served on the consistory.

Leroy was an avid hunter and fisherman. He taught his sons, grandsons, and many nephews the love of fishing. He liked helping his son-in-law, Mark, on the farm, at Curry Seed, and at Sioux Tank Line. He loved being “Papa”, his orange corvette, and spending time at Lake Okoboji.

His family was very important to him, and he will always be remembered for having a heart of gold, helping others, and his annual game feed. His faith, courage, and strength during his ten year battle with cancer was an inspiration to many.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife of more than 41 years, Judy; his three children and their families, Shane and Lisa Schwarz, and their children, Luke, Jenna, and Blake; Shelly and Mark Kallsen, and their children, Chance, Keira, and Cullen; and Chris and Samantha Schwarz, and their children, Logan and Dylan; his six siblings, Marcella Wichers; Sue Dougherty; Tom Schwarz, and his wife, Patsy; Cliff Schwarz, and his wife, Linda; Mary Jean, and her husband, Grizz Kimmel; and Rose, and her husband, Don Walter; Judy’s family, Joyce and Walt De Blauw; Arlene and Bill Dufner; Phyl and Rod Van De Griend; Bonnie Vander Vegte; Darlene and Mel Obbink; Bob Vander Vegte; Elaine and Arlyn Beltman; and Shirley Cunningham.

In addition to his parents and parents-in-law, Ed and Elvina Vander Vegte, he was preceded in death by a sister, Addie, and her husband, Don Malcom; and three brothers-in-law, Don Dougherty, Don Vander Vegte, and Stan Vander Vegte.

The family thanks all the doctors and staff at the Orange City Area Health System, Dr. J. Michelak, and Dr. G. Nowakowski for all of their special care.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
