Died: 1924

Mrs. Mary A. Edwards, an aged resident of Ireton, passed away about 10:30 Monday morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harry Sewick. Her death came rather unexpectedly although she had been failing health for a long time. Recently she went to Sioux City and entered St. Vincent’s Hospital where she spent three weeks receiving treatment. After leaving the hospital she spent a couple of weeks at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hugh Irwin, in Sioux City and was brought back from there only last Thursday and went to her daughter’s home here rather than her own home. She was taken suddenly worse early Monday morning and the end came a few hours later.

Brief funeral services were held at the Sewick home at 2 o’clock this afternoon and at the Methodist Church, conducted by Reverend J.A. Kettle of Odebolt, a former pastor of the Ireton Methodist Church. Interment was made in the Ireton Cemetery.

Mary Ann McDougall was born in La Salle County, Illinois, January 24, 1846, so at the time of her death had attained the age of 78 years, 6 months and 24 days. When a child she moved with her parents to Wisconsin where in 1861 she was united in marriage with Thomas J. Edwards at Mineral Point. They continued to make their home in Wisconsin until 1870 when they came to Le Mars and after a brief residence they located on a homestead in Sioux County, eight miles southeast of Ireton, where they resided until after the death of Mr. Edwards which occurred on May 10, 1895.

Following the death of her husband , Mrs. Edwards moved to Ireton with her family and has resided here continuously since that time. Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Edwards. The eldest died in infancy. Two others died from diphtheria within the same week in the winter of 1880, Clara at the age of 12 years, and James at the age of 7. Three daughters remain to mourn the death of their mother, Mrs. Cora E. Edwards of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Mrs. Adaline A. Irwin of Sioux City and Grace A. Sewick of Ireton. She is also survived by six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. One brother, John E. McDougall of Ogden, Iowa, also survives.

During her residence of fifty-four years in this community Mrs. Edwards acquired many warm friends. While it is true that but few who shared with her the hardships of the early pioneer days now remain, the friends of the later period of her death were none the less true and loyal. She was a good mother, a faithful neighbor and a splendid Christian lady. For more than twenty-eight years she was a member of the Methodist Church of Ireton.
