Christopher Anthony Soppe, 49 of Ireton, Iowa, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 18, 2016 at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars following a tragic accident.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 22, 2016 at the Le Mars Bible Church, 1550 7th Avenue SE, in Le Mars. Pastor Mike Hulinsky will officiate. Military Honors will be provided by the Heeren-McHale-Wilkens American Legion Post 724 of Brunsville, Iowa. Visitation with the family present will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2016, with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., all at the Le Mars Bible Church. Visitation will resume from 9:30 a.m. until service time on Wednesday at the church. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel-Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.

The family prefers memorials be made in Chris’s name to a Mission Trip Scholarship to be established for future missionaries through the Le Mars Bible Church.

Christopher was born December 22, 1966, in Dubuque, Iowa, and is the son of Loras and Erma (Theisen) Soppe. Christopher graduated from Cascade High School in 1985 and received a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in education from South Dakota State University. Christopher began his career with Wal-Mart as an assistant manager, store manager, and regional trainer throughout the Midwest. He also served in the United States Navy during the Persian Gulf Conflict.

Chris was married to Cynthia Franke for nine amazing years, until she went to be with Jesus following a long battle against cancer. In 2009, Christopher married Carina Barrett and moved to Le Mars, Iowa and became a beloved parent to Carina’s four children, Hannah, Abigail, Travis, and Andrea.

After earning a Master’s in education, Chris spent one year teaching at Le Mars Community High School. Most recently, Chris taught special education at Boyden Hull Community. He also coached the high school baseball team at Boyden Hull.

Chris will be remembered for his fervent love for the Lord and his heart for serving others. He lived life to the fullest and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Carina of Ireton; his four children: Hannah Barrett of Minneapolis, MN; Abigail and Josh Chavez and baby girl of Bellevue, NE; Travis Barrett of Omaha, NE; and Andrea Barrett of Ireton; his parents: Loras and Erma Soppe of Dubuque, IA; his brothers and their families: Mike and Merrill Soppe of Calmer, IA and Jeremy and Krystal Soppe of Sioux Rapids, IA; his sisters: Tina Soppe of West Union, IA and Jackie Goetken of Duluth, MN; his father and mother-in-law: Norm and Florence Plender of Orange City, IA; sisters-in-law and their families: Jerry and Pam Goslinga of Sheldon, IA and Todd and Valerie Hoffman of Orange City, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews along with many friends.

Chris is preceded in death by his wife, Cindy Soppe.

IRETON, Iowa- An Ireton man was killed over the weekend after being struck by a tree branch.

Christopher Soppe, 49, was cutting down a tree branch outside a residence at 510th Street southeast of Ireton on Saturday afternoon. A release from the Sioux county Sheriff's Office said deputies determined the tree branch had hit Soppe.

Soppe was transported via ambulance to the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, where he died of his injuries, the release said.

The Boyden-Hull School district issued a statement saying Soppe was a high school special education teacher in the district and coached freshman baseball.

The statement said Soppe was helping a neighbor clean up storm debris when the accident occurred.
