Hawarden, Iowa ~ Robert John “Bob” Hendricks, 92, of Hawarden, died on Saturday, May 7, 2016 at the Hawarden Regional Healthcare Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 10, 2016 at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Doug Klein officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery with Military Rites by the Alcester VFW. Visitation with the family will begin at 5:30 p.m. Monday with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

Robert John Hendricks was born March 16, 1924 in rural Plymouth County, near Akron, Iowa, the son of Evert and Gladys (McMahon) Hendricks. He graduated from the Akron High School in 1942. He worked in a packing house in Sioux City before serving in the war. Bob served in the US Army as a parachutist in the Asiatic Pacific serving from March 2, 1945 to December 3, 1946. He was stationed with the 11th Airborne in Yamagata Sendai Headquarters on the island of Honshu in Japan for the occupation. Following his discharge, Bob began working for the railroad in Alcester and later for Cy Youngkin in the body shop in Hawarden, Iowa. Later he worked for Rex Truesdell.

Bob married Dorothy Johnson on September 11, 1947 at Beresford, South Dakota. Together they made their home in Hawarden where he owned and operated the B & B Body Shop from 1947 until retirement in 1986. Following his retirement, Bob worked part time for Sioux Fertilizer for many years.

He was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden, the Knights of Columbus, Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Hawarden American Legion and the Alcester VFW. He enjoyed doing family genealogy and dancing with Dorothy.

Survivors include the love of his life, wife Dorothy; six children, Linda and Mick Mapes of Platte City, Missouri, Betty Helm of Pueblo, Colorado, Mike and Gita Hendricks of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Jane and Randy Larson of Hawarden, Julia and Mark Wells of Ireton, Iowa and Patrick and Mary Hendricks of Hawarden; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; his brother, Fay and Millie Hendricks of Alcester, South Dakota; and a brother-in-law, Ray Streeter of Columbus, Missouri.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jim Hendricks; and his sister, Mary Jean Streeter.
