Funeral services were held at Central Reformed Church here at 1:30 p.m. Monday March 12, for Gerrit Doornwaard, 64, lifelong Sioux Center resident and practicing attorney in Sioux Center since 1933, who died at his home about 2 a.m. Friday March 9, of an apparent heart attack.
He had not been ill.
Services were conducted by the Rev. Wesley Kiel and burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery here under the direction of the Cooperative Funeral Home.
Mr. Doornwaard was born in Sioux Center August 18, 1908. He married Harriet Grotenhuis Oct. 13, 1934, at Sioux Falls, S.D. He held a B. A. degree with a major in Commerce from the University of Iowa and was a 1933 graduate of the University of Iowa Law School. He started a practice in Sioux Center shortly thereafter.
Survivors include the widow; a son, John of Gibsonia Pa: a daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Jane) Den Herder of Cedar Falls, IA; two sisters, Mrs. L. G. Van Roekel of Sioux Center; and Mrs. Henry Van Roekel of Pella, IA; and four grandchildren.
Mr. Doornwaard was a member of the Sioux County Bar Association. He had served for a time on the board of education of the Sioux Center School district and as city attorney.
