Leonard H. Berkenpas, 62, general manager of the Carnes Elevator, died unexpecedly Sunday evening at the Orange City Hospital. He was taken by ambulance from his home after becoming ill.

He was born February 9, 1913, at Seney, a son of the late Jake and Albertha Dambrink Berkenpas. His marriage to Anna Marie Scholten took place May 18, 1939 at Alton.

Mr. Berkenpas had lived in the Carnes area the last 30 years and was a member of the American Legion and the First Reformed Church in Alton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the First Reformed Church, Alton, with Reverend Clarence Greving officiating. Burial will be in Nassau Township Cemetery under the direction of the Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City.

Survivors are his wife; four sons, Ronald, Spencer; Roger, Sacramento; James, Sioux Center, and Phillip, Orange City; a daughter, Mary Ann, at home; five brothers, William, LeMars; Ray of Los Angeles; Henry, Sioux Center; Arthur, Lisbon, and Norman, a military career man and six sisters, Mrs. Merlin Singer and Alice Jennings, both of LeMars; Mrs. Walter Renken, Struble; Mrs. Marion Van Roekel, Orange City; Mrs. Cliff (Francis) Foster, Wilmar, Minnesota, and Mrs. Paul Hoppe of LeMars.
