Wm. Ashmore, an almost lifelong resident of this community, died about 2 o'clock last Thursday afternoon at his home in this city after a long illness from heart trouble. He had been a sufferer for many years and on numerous occasions had been close to death's door. Even though suffering greatly most of the time during the last few years of his life he kept steadfastly at work whenever it was physically possible. Two weeks before his death he suffered an acute attack, followed by a partial recovery and later a relapse which foretold the end. Brief funeral services were held at the home at 2:30 Saturday afternoon, followed by services at the Associated church, with Rev. Edwin Booth in charge. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.

William Newton Ashmore was born at Platteville, Wis., May 17; 1870, so had but recently passed his 56th birthday. He came with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. U. R. Ashmore, to Union county, S D., when but eighteen months old and his home has ever since been in this community. He farmed for many years but ill health compelled hint to give up heavy farm work ten or twelve years ago and he has since made his home in Hawarden. He was engaged in the restaurant business for some time but for several years past he has held the contract for carrying the mail from the postoffice to the railway stations. On Aug. 24, 1892, he was united, in marriage with Nellie Newton of Dubuque, Iowa, who survives him.

To this union five children were born. Samuel died July 7,1918. Those surviving are Mrs. Donagan of Sioux Center, Mrs. T. W. Meres of Des Moines, and Jay and Raymond of Hawarden . Mr. Ashmore had five sisters, Mrs. Chas. Gilman passed away at Lemmon, S. .D., May 16, 1916.

The surviving sisters: are Mrs. Walter Scott of Hawarden, Mrs. W. M. Weller of Los Angeles, Calif.
Mrs. L. D. Hilton of Granite Falls, Minn., and Mrs. Chad Godfrey of LeMars. He is also survived by three brothers, U. R. Ashmore Jr. of Granite Falls, Minn.; Samuel Ashmore of Vermillion, S. D., and E. G. Collins of Tulsa, Okla.

During his long residence in this community Mr. Ashmore acquired many loyal friends. Of a quiet and retiring disposition, he conducted himself in an honest, upright and honorable manner and bore his physical affliction with admirable stoicism. Fifteen years ago he united with the Congregational church of this city. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the members of his family.
