From the Rock Valley Bee, May 16, 1917:

MRS. DANIEL BLOEM

Mrs. Daniel Bloem passed away last Thursday afternoon after an illness of about three months with heart trouble and other complications. She was one of the pioneer residents of this city, having lived here twenty-eight years.

The subject of this sketch was born in the Netherlands August 10, 1865, and at the time of her death had reached the age of fifty-one years, six months and twenty eight days. Her early life was spent in her native country. She was united in marriage to Daniel Bloem May 19, 1887. Two years later she and her husband immigrated to Rock Valley where the deceased had lived continuously since that time. The town was then in its infancy, and she and her husband watched it grow, had seen the county develop, and had passed through all the hardship incident to pioneer life.

She was the mother of nine children, five of whom are living. They are Delko Bloem of Akron, Ia., Mrs. Gerrit Ver Meulen of Rock Valley, and Anna, Herman, and Eberdina who are at home with their father.

The deceased was a woman of beautiful Christian character, was a kind and loving wife and mother, and her death leaves a vacancy in the home that can never be filled.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Reformed church in this city, being conducted by Rev. B. DeJong, and the remains were taken to Valley View Cemetery for burial. The services were largely attended by sympathizing friends who endeavored in this way to show their respect for the departed and their sympathy with the bereaved husband, children and other relatives.

Those present from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Herman Lois of Rhame, N.D., Ben Lois from Melcom, Minn., brothers of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Bloem of Winfred, S.D., a brother of the bereaved husband, Mrs. Chris Vander Laan of Hull and Mr. and Mrs. Delko Bloem of Akron, Ia.

She was married to Daniel Bloem May 19, 1887, and two years later they came to America and located at Rock Valley. The Sioux County Cemetery Index has two entries for her, both of which may reflect a poorly legible headstone, and one of which appears to conflate her death date with her husband's: (1) Bloem, Fienge Lewis, b. 10 Aug 1865, d. 8 Mar 1931, Valley View Cem Rock Valley IA (WPA Index); (2) Bloem, Pense Lewis, b. 10 Aug 1865, d. 8 Mar 1917, wife ss Daniel, Valley View Cem Rock Valley IA. (Daniel Bloem died 2 March 1931)
