Ralph Sayre, 83, of Portland, Oregon, died Friday, December 5, 2003, in Portland. At his request, no public service will be held. Memorials may be made to Alberston College of Idaho.

Mr. Sayre was born August 6, 1920, in Stuart, the son of Ralph McCullough and Jennie Russell Sayre. In 1944 he married Lois Gregg, daughter of Will and Marie Gregg of Hawarden.

Mr. Sayre was reared in Menlo and attended Grinnell College, graduating with a bachelors degree. At Columbia University, where he was a Roberts Fellow, he earned his masters degree and his doctoral degree. He served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946. He taught and was an administrator at Parsons College from 1949-1956. At Albertson College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho, from 1956-1982 he served as professor of history and as dean of the college from 1956 to 1966 and from 1980-1982. He and his wife moved to Waldport, Oregon, in 1984 and to Portland in 1989.

He was active in the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges, serving on the board of trustees and on the commission on colleges.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Gregg Sayre of Rochester, New York, Sam Sayre of Portland and William Sayre of Santa Fe, New Mexico; and four grandchildren.
