Gerald “Jerry” Meyer, 83, of Marcus, Iowa, formerly of rural Remsen, Iowa, passed away on Friday, January 15, 2016 at the Heartland Care Center in Marcus. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Father Daniel C. Guenther will celebrate Mass. Burial will follow at Holy Name Cemetery with military honors conducted by F.I. Goodburn Post #517 of the American Legion. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 18, 2016 at the Earnest – Johnson Funeral Home in Marcus. The family will be present from 4-8 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Tuesday.

Gerald James Meyer was born on May 18, 1932 in Sioux County, Iowa, the son of Henry and Agnes (Healy) Meyer. Jerry proudly served his country with the Marine Corps during the Korean War from 1951 to 1953.

On April 17, 1956, Gerald and Mary Helen Benedict were united in marriage at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. They made their home on the family farm northwest of Marcus where Jerry and Mary raised their family. They farmed side by side for 54 years. Along with farming, Jerry operated a corn shelling business.

Jerry was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He belonged to F.I. Goodburn Post #517 of the American Legion for over 60 years. In earlier years, Mary and Jerry enjoyed square dancing. They also enjoyed fishing and camping. He was an avid racing fan, attending many sprint car races. He was also known as a practical joker.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Irene Ellen Fletcher and Dwight Mock of Wayne, NE, James Francis Meyer and wife, Arlene of Damascus, MD, Raymond John Meyer and his wife, Terri of Le Mars, IA; Rita Ann Wallinga and Todd McGeorge of Barnard, MO and David Gerald Meyer of Le Mars, IA; 13 grandchildren, Rebekah Fletcher, Daniel (Christy) Fletcher, Marilyn Fletcher, Christa (Philip) Trice, Stephen Geraci, Christafer Meyer, Bradley (Victoria) Meyer, Phillip (Kayla) Meyer, Sam Wallinga, Tyler Wallinga, Jeff Allan, Lindsay (Tim) Green, and Haylee Meyer; 11 great-grandchildren, Branden Johnson, Isabella Fletcher, Sabrina Fletcher, Stacey Fletcher, Kaylee Fletcher, Aiden LaGrone, Raelynn Meyer, Gavin Meyer, Noah Trice, Benjamin Trice and Isabelle Trice; a brother, Bernard (Barb) Meyer of Minneapolis, MN; sisters-in-law, Fran and Roger Briggs of Cleghorn, IA, Carol Kooistra of Richfield, MN, and Aline Meyer of Garland, TX.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary on January 15, 2015; a son-in-law, Ed Fletcher; a sister, Doris (Robert) Stratton; and a brother, Don Meyer.
