WAS 74 YEARS OLD AND LIVED IN THIS COMMUNITY 46 YEARS--SURVIVED BY SIX CHILDREN

Mrs. Alice E. White, a well known and highly respected resident of this city, passed away at the home of E.A. Squier at 10:15 o’clock last Thursday night. Her passing was due to a stroke of paralysis. She had been in failing health the past year. Mrs. White had been a resident of Calliope and Hawarden since 1887 and the news of her death came as a shock to a wide circle of friends. Always a kind and charitable woman, she had endeared herself to all who knew her and in her death the community loses a highly respected resident.

Mrs. White was born of southern parents and both of her grandfathers fought in the Revolutionary War. Her grandmother, a Mrs. McAltee, was a cousin to Alexander Hamilton.

Alice E. Underwood was born at Shulleburg, Wisconsin, October 13, 1858, and was a daughter of John and Lucy Underwood. She grew to womanhood there and on July 30, 1878, she was united in marriage at White Springs, Wisconsin to James White. They resided at White Oak Springs until 1887 when they moved to Iowa, locating at Calliope. They lived on a farm for several years when they moved to Hawarden and her home has been in this city ever since. Mr. White passed away August 13, 1926, just seven years ago.

Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. White, six of whom survive. The children are William and Robert White of Hawarden; Mrs. Sylvia Hart and Mrs. Florence Sullivan of Great Falls, Montana; Mrs. Ruth Wells of Benson, Minnesota, and Mrs. Josephine Clark of Rapid City, South Dakota. Two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Spuier and Margaret White, preceded their mother in death.

Mrs. White became an active member of the Methodist Church early in life. Funeral services were held at 1:30 Sunday afternoon at the Methodist Church, with Reverend Robert H. Forrester officiating. The sons, “The Old Rugged Cross,” “In the Garden” and “Fade, Fade,” were rendered by the choir. Burial was made in Grace Hill Cemetery by the side of her husband.

“If you pause at the City of Trouble, Or Wait in the Valley of Tears, Be patient--the train will move forward and rush down the track of years. Whatever the place is you seek for, Whatever your game or your quest, You will come at last with rejoicing, to the beautiful City of Rest. You shall store all your baggage of worries, You shall feel perfect peace in this realm, You shall sail with old friends on fair waters, With joy and delight at the Helm. You shall wander in cool, fragrant gardens, With those who have loved you the best, And the hopes that were lost in life’s journey.”
