Hawarden, Iowa ~ Alvin Van Den Top, 72, of Nebraska City, Nebraska, formerly of Hawarden, Iowa died on Friday, October 9, 2015 at the Golden Living Center in Nebraska City, Nebraska.
Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 20, 2015 at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden with Pastor Steve Jewett of the New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Alvin Van Den Top was born February 8, 1943 near Rock Valley, Iowa, the son of Tom and Rika (Van Grootheest) Van Den Top. He married Cynthia Koolhaus in August of 1962. Together they farmed near Rock Valley.
Alvin later married Carole Schelling on February 17, 1979 at Las Vegas, Nevada. They lived in Jasper, Minnesota for 9 years before moving back to the Hawarden, Iowa area. Carole died May 31, 1990.
In January of 1991, Alvin married Joy Porsch in Westfield, Iowa. They made their home in Hawarden.
Alvin enjoyed wintering in Arizona and later lived there full time for a year before returning to assisted living in Hawarden. He loved riding his Harley motorcycle.
Survivors include 3 sons, Kevin Van Den Top and Kathleen of Bellevue, Nebraska, Keith Van Den Top and Michelle of Blaine, Minnesota, and Alvin Van Den Top, Jr. and Tonya of Tea, South Dakota; daughter, Kimberly Caniglia and Kent of Papillion, Nebraska; 2 step-children, Theresa Schelling of Hawarden and Bonnie Jurrens and Dean also of Hawarden; brother, Gerald Van Den Top and Claire of Coopersville, Michigan; a sister-in-law, June Van Den Top of Grand Rapids, Michigan; and 10 grandchildren.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents; step-son, Duane Schelling; and a brother, Gerrit Van Den Top.
