Hawarden, Iowa ~ Fern Lorraine Opdahl, 90, of Hawarden, passed away on Tuesday, October 06, 2015 at her residence in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Timothy Greaves officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Cemetery rural Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon Friday, with the family present from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden. Condolences may be sent to www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Fern Lorraine Opdahl was born April 18, 1925 near Sioux Center, Iowa, the daughter of Albert and Martha (Baumgartner) Muth. She graduated from Hawarden High School in 1943. Fern married Lorentz G. Opdahl January 31, 1947 near Sioux Center. She worked as a bookkeeper for her husband’s business Opdahl Fertilizer, which later was Sioux Fertilizer in Hawarden, Iowa. Lorentz died on March 18, 2003.
Fern enjoyed sewing, sewing clothes, quilting, gardening, canning, and playing cards. She enjoyed her work at her daughter and son-in-law, Julie and Don's store, In Weave, where she worked until her passing.
Fern is survived by her four children, Linda and Dennis McAuliffe of Hanoi, Vietnam, Patricia Everrett of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Tom Opdahl of Hawarden, Iowa and Julie and Don Ulmer also of Hawarden; grandchildren, Joshua and Lora Hoff of Dallas, Texas and their children, Rob, Caleb, and Micah, Jonathon and Linda Hoff of Dallas, Texas and their children, Jesse, Megan, and Brody, Aimee Everrett of New Orleans, Louisiana, Rob Everrett of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and Gregory and Derek Ulmer both of Hawarden, Iowa; and many nephews and nieces.
Fern was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and siblings and their spouses, Tom and Hazel Muth, Russell Muth, Bernadine and Otto Meins, Melba and John Bultman, and Donna and Ralph Brown.
