Early Pioneer Called by Death
Frederick Worcester, one of the pioneer homesteaders of Washington township, passed away Sunday, Feb. 6th, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ida Casavant, at Witten, S. D., from infirmities incident to his advanced years.

Accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Casavant, and three of sons, Charles, Henry and Herbert Worcester , the body was brought to Ireton Wednesday and funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon in charge of Rev. Wm. P. Webb, the pastor. Interment was made in the Ireton cemetery.

Frederick Worcester was born in Lowell, Mass., May 19, 1838, and died at Witten, S. D., Feb. 5, 1928, at theadvanced age of 89 years, 8 months and 23 days. On Sept. 22, 1865, he was united in marriage with Miss Julia Taylor at Monmouth, Jackson county, Iowa.

Seven children were born to this union, five sons and two daughters all of whom survive. The children are Charles, George, Herbert and Henry Worcester and Mrs. Ida Casavant of Witten, SD., Mrs. Emma Walrod of Wabash, Ind., and Victor Worcester of Ireton. He is also survived by twenty-four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mrs. Worcester preceded him in death about sixteen years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Worcester and family came to Sioux county in 1870 and took a homestead in Washington township, five miles southwest of Ireton. Here they reared their family amid the hardships incident to those pioneer days. The country was very sparsely settled at that time and neighbors were drawn close to one another in a genuine community interest and early friendships acquired there remained steadfast throughout life. Mr. Worcester was ever respected and admired by his neighbors and acquaintances. He was possessed of the strictest honor and integrity and his many old time friends and neighbors sincerely mourn his departure from this life. About twelve or fourteen years ago he left the farm in Washington township and has since made his home with his children near Witten, S, D.
