She spent her youth in the Orange City area and attended the Orange City Public School, graduating with the class of 1945. Following high school, Marna continued her education at Northwestern College in Orange City studying Elementary Education. She graduated in May of 1947.
Marna began her teaching career as the second grade teacher at Onawa, IA for two years, then taught for one year at Estherville, IA. In the fall of 1950, she came to Sanborn, IA to fill the position of Kindergarten teacher, and remained so for three and one-half years. During the summer of 1951, Marna attended Westmar College at LeMars, IA where she received her Standard Elementary Lifetime Teaching Certificate. Even when she no longer taught full-time, she did substitute teaching for many years after.

Marna was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Sanborn. She belonged to the Ladies' Aid, having served as president and treasurer. She also used her teaching skills there by volunteering as a Sunday School teacher, and for many years led worship services through her gift of music as the organist. Marna was a member of the 20th Century Club, the O'Brien County Retired Teachers, and sang in the O'Brien County Farm Bureau Chorus. She loved playing bridge with the Ace of Clubs Bridge Club, and was a long-time member of the local Birthday Club.
