J. H. Rehder, a prominent resident of Hawarden and community for more than 39 years, passed away at 10:40 Sat. morning at the Hull hospital.

While Mr. Rehder had been failing in health the past year, few outside of the family circle were aware of this. He entered the Hawarden hospital Nov. 1 and received treatment for three days, but when he improved he returned home. Mon. Nov. 16, he was taken to the Hull hospital where he died last Sat.

Funeral services were held at the home at 12:30 and at Peace Lutheran Church in Garfield township at 1:30 Tues. afternoon. Interment was in Grace Hill Cemetery in Hawarden. The church was filled to capacity by relatives and friends who had come to pay their last respects. The pall bearers were Albert Klumb, Albert Stoltenberg, Lee Hass, Louis Wegner, Fred A. Miller and Rex Truesdell.

Julius Henry Rehder, eldest son of Jurgen and Lena Rehder, was born April 12, 1871, in Lincoln township, Tama county, so was past 71 years of age at the time of his death. There he grew to young manhood and attended business college at Davenport.

He was united in marriage with Caroline Laufert of Gladbrook on March 11, 1896. To this union were born three children, one of whom died in infancy. After his marriage, he continued to live on a farm in Tama county for seven years.

In 1903, he came to Sioux County and located on a farm in Garfield township, 10 miles northeast of Hawarden. He lived on this farm until 1931, when he retired and came to Hawarden to occupy a new home which he built on 9th street.

He was one of a family of eight children. He is survived by his wife and two children. Albert of Hawarden and Mrs. Edna Winterfield of Sioux Center. There are 11 grandchildren. He also leaves three brothers, and three sisters, Theodore of Lincoln, Iowa; Louis, George, Mrs. Louisa Dressen and Mrs. Clara Martens of Gladbrook, IA., and Mrs. Ernestina Voss of Perry, OK.

While Mr. Rehder lived in Garfield township he took an active part in the civic and church affairs of his community. He served as a township trustee for 20 years and was a member of the school board for 25 years. He was an active member of the Peace Lutheran Church and was one of the chief workers when the church was remodeled. Even after coming to Hawarden his interest was still in this church. Honesty was one of his outstanding characteristics and his word was as good as his bond.

After he came to Hawarden he was chosen chairman of the Hawarden chapter of the Red Cross and spent much time in the interest of this cause. Throughout his life he was a staunch republican.

The last few years he spent much of his time at home assisting his wife and caring for her, as she does not enjoy good health. His death is a severe blow to her and she will greatly miss the counsel of her companion for over 46 years.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were many.
