Hawarden, IA: Elwood “Whitey” Iverson, 94, of Hawarden, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Hillcrest Health Care Center at Hawarden. Funeral service will be Saturday, February 28, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hawarden United Methodist Church with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Visitation, with family present, will be Friday, February 27, 2015 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home at Hawarden. Condolences may be left for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.
Elwood “Whitey” Iverson was born on a farm near Meckling, South Dakota on February 23, 1921. He was one of the four children of Martin and Anniea (Paulson) Iverson. He attended a rural school and graduated from Meckling High School in 1938. After graduation he attended Springfield Normal School and later graduated from the University of Nebraska. He completed graduate work at Colorado State University and Iowa State.
No jobs were available after his high school graduation. At the age of 17 he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. (CCC). He then had an opportunity to work in the Black Hills on Harney Peak, Coolidge Fire Look Out, Custer State Park Cabins, and Mount Rushmore.
He joined the Army Air Force in 1942 and served as a pilot until 1946. He married Vi Jones on August 8, 1945. They moved to Hawarden, Iowa in 1948, where he taught Vocational Agriculture for 36 years. He retired from teaching in 1984. Whitey then worked as an Ag representative at the Farmers State Bank for 8 years, and served on the bank board for several years.
He was thrilled when his daughter Lynn was born in 1954.
Whitey was active in the community as a FFA leader, Chamber of Commerce, and served 27 years as a member of the Sioux County Conservation Board. He was an active member of the United Methodist Church and was honored as the Citizen of the Year in 1983.
He loved ball room dancing, exercising, woodworking, fishing, and having coffee with friends and former students.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Vi; daughter, Lynn and her husband Rick of Naperville, Illinois; grandson, Kristopher; a sister-in-law, Irene Iverson of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and 5 nephews and nieces.
Whitey was preceded in death by his parents; and 3 brothers, Elsworth, Laurel, and Martin, Jr.
