David “Dave” Visser, age 85 of George, IA died Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Good Samaritan Center in George, IA.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George, IA with Rev. Paul Fischer officiating.
Burial will be private with family in the Evergreen Lawn Cemetery in George at a later date.
Visitation will be Tuesday, February 17th from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Jurrens Funeral Home of George.
David Leroy Visser was born on May 15, 1929 in Orange City, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Jennie (Graham) Visser. He spent his younger years in Hull, Iowa before moving to George in 1942. Dave graduated from George High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1946 to 1948 and was stationed in Japan. On June 10, 1949, he was united in marriage to Norma Jacobs in George, Iowa. The couple made their home in George and to this union three daughters were born, Vicki, Dee and Jean. Dave and Norma owned and operated Visser Hardware Store in George for over 60 years. Dave enjoyed his green and yellow Piper Pacer airplane and logged many hours flying. Following their retirement Dave and Norma wintered in Arizona for a time. Dave was an active member of the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in George. He was a member of the Masons and the Shriners. He was an avid follower of all the Iowa Hawkeye sporting events. Dave enjoyed fishing, golfing, traveling and especially spending time with his kids, grandkids and great-grandchildren. He was a jokester and a great story teller. He fought a gallant fight against the auto immune disease, “Myasthenia Gravis”. Dave went into the George Good Samaritan Center on January 15, 2015 and passed away Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the age of 85.
Dave is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Norma Visser of George, IA; three daughters, Vicki (Lee) Rath of Larchwood, IA, Dee (Steve) Tinnin of Flushing, MI and Jean (Brian) Harms of Belle Fourche, SD; eight grandchildren: Tony (Erica) Rath, Eric (Tracy Bahou) Rath, Amber (Brady) Hess, Steve (Sarah Boyce) Tinnin II, Heather Tinnin-Cardinal, Tyler (Leah) Harms, Marcus (Angela) Harms and Cody Harms; ten great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Jennie Visser; and mother and father-in-law, Frieda and Elra Jacobs.
