Died: February 28, 1996 Sioux Center, Iowa

Ben Vonk, Sr. 100, of Sioux Center, IA, and formerly a longtime resident Of the rural treton area, died on Wednesday, February 28, 1996, at the Sioux Center Community Health Center. Services were held on Monday morning, March 4,1996, at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, the Reverend Robert Drenten officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Sioux Center, under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

Mr. Vonk was born September 21, 1895, in Ede, The Netherlands, the son of Hendrick and Gerritje (Bleyenberg) Vonk. The family came to America in 1901, and settled in Sioux County. He married Jennie Katze On January 25, 1922, in Estelline, SD. She died in 1969.

Mr. Vonk was a board member of the Sioux Center Hospital, Memorial Funeral Home, and the Farmers Co-Op Society. He married Alice (Bonthuis) Vande Weerd on January 2, 1970. They were active in the Senior Citizens and Golden Age Club. They moved to the Sioux Center Community. Health Center in 1989, and Mrs. Vonk died in 1989. He was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center and served on church committees.

Survivors include 11 children and their spouses, Henry and Gertrude (Hulstein) of Heron Lake, MN, George and Henrietta (Van Voorst) of Sioux Center, Benjamin and Winnie (Van Regenmorter) of Chandler, AZ, Jeanette and John Feekes of Sioux Center, Gerrit of Sunny Side, WA, Gertrude and Elmer Vande Berg of Sioux Center, Peter and Donna (De Leeuw) of Sioux Center, Goldie and Duane De Jager of Maurice, IA, Katherine and Harold Vande Kieft of Orange City, IA, Dorothy and Andy Van Bochove of Phoenix, AZ, and Eugene and Judy (Van Dyke) of Ireton, IA; 56 grandchildren, including local residents Pam Broek, Bennie Vonk, Scott Vonk, Jim Vonk and Dan Vonk; 90 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; five stepchildren; step-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Hendrik Jr.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a daughter-in-law, Jennie.
