Johanna Oldenkamp was born June 12, 1926 on a farm southwest of Rock Valley, Iowa to Jake and Agnes Talsma. She attended rural school until the family moved to Artesia, California, where she graduated from eighth grade in 1939. After returning to Iowa, she worked for nearby families helping with housework and children. On April 2, 1946 she married George Oldenkamp at her parents’ home. They lived on a farm northwest of Rock Valley until 1958, moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota until 1961, and returned to farm north of Rock Valley. They moved to their own farm near Alvord in 1973 and remained there until 2007 when they retired to live in their new home in Rock Valley. Johanna moved to Pleasant Acres at Hull, Iowa in June, 2014. Johanna and George were married 68 years and 9 ˝ months.
Johanna loved to cook, baked great pies, wrote a column for the church paper, was the secretary of her ladies circle, and a lifelong member of First Reformed Church at Rock Valley where she was very active. She loved to read, was an expert seamstress, was a family historian, and writer. We will miss her sense of humor, great laugh, and above all her determination and courage.
Johanna is survived by her husband, George; sister, Dorothy Huggett of Fair Oaks, California; daughters, Sandi Oldenkamp of Portland, Oregon and Garneth Peterson and her husband Brian of St. Paul, Minnesota; grandchildren, Eric, Kirstin, and Julia Peterson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters, and two brothers.
