Kevin Joseph Hass, 37, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota passed away as a result of colon cancer at 10:40 A.M. on February 5, 2008 at the Hawarden Community Hospital, Hawarden, Iowa. Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 16, 2008 at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden, Iowa with Rev. Todd Bunge officiating.

Kevin was the second of two children born to Myron "Bud" and Myrna (Farley) Hass at 5 A.M. on March 12, 1970. He was a part of the fourth generation of Hasses to reside of the family farm northeast of Hawarden, Iowa. In 1977, Kevin moved with his mom and brother to Beresford, South Dakota, where Kevin graduated from Beresford High School with honors in 1989.

While in Beresford, Kevin worked at various jobs. He did general maintenance work for the Beresford school system during the summers of 1987 and 1988. In 1990, he worked for the US Census Bureau. And, Kevin made pizzas at the C-store.

In the early 1990's, he moved to Sioux Falls, SD and he and Chris Lunstra had a daughter. Alexandra. He worked for a number of dining establishments. These included Tomacelli's, Bagel Boy, and T. C.'s Referee. In 2006, Kevin lived and worked in Milford, Iowa for a brief time before returning to Sioux Falls. Most recently, Kevin worked at Uno Tomato in Sioux Falls. During most of the last two months of his life, Kevin resided with his father in Hawarden, Iowa.

Throughout his life, Kevin enjoyed many hobbies. As a child, he built model airplanes, and was involved with model railroading and rocketry. During high school, he enjoyed downhill and cross-country skiing, and was a member of the Sun-n-Fun Ski racing team. Kevin was a gifted artist who enjoyed drawing. He had once stenciled the image of Jimi Hendrix onto the front hood of his Chevy Luv pickup. Kevin also enjoyed repairing and riding bicycles. He was fascinated by night sky and interested in space exploration. Kevin’s other interest included camping and traveling; and, his favorite place was Hannah near Spearfish, South Dakota.

Kevin was a member of a number Sioux Falls rock bands over a seventeen year period. His first band was the Flak Jakets. Others included White Hot and Blue, Headshot, the Chew Toys, the Velour Prunes, From Within, and Search for George. Most recently, Kevin was a member of Three Man.

Kevin was an avid reader. He enjoyed the writings and philosophies of Carl Sagan and often metaphorically said, “Sagan is my co-pilot.” During the time of his terminal illness, Kevin read numerous books and could often read two per day. He said, “The only thing that I can take with me is knowledge; and, I plan to take as much of it with me as I can.” During his last months, Kevin had a great deal of reverence for the book, Tuesday with Morrie, which he encouraged those closest to him to read. Dealing with his own terminal illness gave Kevin a unique perspective as well as a wisdom and maturity well beyond his years. From the beginning, Kevin accepted his own fate with grace and dignity.

Kevin was survived by his daughter, Alexandra Lunstra, and her mother, Chris Lunstra, both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and by his father, Myron “Bud” Hass of Hawarden, Iowa; and brother, Brian Hass of Beresford, South Dakota; four aunts; two uncles; cousins; a wealth of friends.
His mother, Myrna, preceded him in death on April 4, 1998; his grandparents; two aunts; three uncles; and good friends, Lynnette Bovill and Jamie Stene.

On May 14, 2008, a monument for Kevin and his father was erected at Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden, IA. And, an urn containing some of Kevin's ashes was buried beneath it. Kevin wanted his ashes to be spread at Hanna in the Black Hills of South Dakota; and, most of the remainder of his ashes were spread there on June 28, 2008. The last of the remainder of the Kevin's ashes were spread at Hanna in July of 2008. A benefit was held on September 27, 2008.

Kevin did a lot of living during his short life. He was a fun-loving and outgoing person who easily made friends wherever he went. He had a fantastic sense of humor. And, Kevin was a wonderful father. He will be missed by all who knew him. Kevin has now started his cosmic journey. Godspeed, Kevin Hass!
