Alice Mans; 88; of Orange City went to be with her Lord early Sunday morning, July 9, at her home. A service to celebrate her life was Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Reformed, Church in Orange City with the Rev. Timothy Ouwinga officiating. Interment was at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City.

Mrs. Mans was born on March 30, 1918, in rural Sheldon, to Dick and Lena (De Jager) Verdoorn. Her family moved to Middleburg when she was a young child, and she attended school in the one-room school house there. When she was a young woman, Arie K. Mans came from South Dakota to work for Dick Verdoorn on the farm, and he soon became, the love of her life. They were married on June 10, 1941, at the farm in Middleburg. They were blessed with six daughters. They made their first home in Middleburg and farmed there for a year, before moving to South Dakota. Two years later, they moved to a farm just north of Orange City. In 1960, they bought a farm near Maurice. She was a busy mother and homemaker, but also helped with the farm chores. They sold the farm and moved to Orange City in 1974.

He continued to farm and do custom work, and she owned and operated Double A Ceramics and Greenware with her daughter, Ardith. She enjoyed making and painting ceramic pieces, was a talented seamstress and quilter, and enjoyed plants and flowers She was a member of First Christian Reformed Church, where she belonged to the Faith, Hope, and Love Society.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years; six daughters and their husbands, Arlene and William Sahmel of Fairport, New York, Ardith and Ronald J. De Jong of Orange City, Alice Mae and John Jongma of Hawarden, Carolyn and Daryl Dekkers of Fort Collins Colorado, Wanda and Gary Coon of Brockport, New York, and Meredith and David Zwirn of Bridgeport, Nebraska;15 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; several foster grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and three stepsisters, Nettie Mellema and Marie Maasen, both of Orange City, and Johanna De Haan of Cutlerville, Michigan.

She was preceded in death by six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers and two sisters in childhood; two stepbrothers; and a stepsister. Memorials may be directed to Home Health and Hospice or the Christian School, both in Orange City.
