Ernest Vortherms, 87, of Hospers died Thursday, August 31, at Orange City Health System Long Term Care Unit. Services were 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hospers, with the Rev. John Vakulskas jr. officiating. Burial was in St. Anthony Cemetery in Hospers with graveside military services conducted by American Legion, Reuter Post 0423.

Vortherms was born December 16, 1918, in rural Granville, son of Frank and Regina (Beckmann) Vortherms. He was raised in the Granville area and received his education at St. Joseph Catholic School. He was a farm laborer in the Granville area. On September 2, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army and served during World War II being honorably discharged Nov. 17, 1945. On December 31, 1947, he married Adella Jungers at Hospers. They made their home near Hospers where they were engaged in farming. He also worked at the Hospers
Packing Plant until his retirement in 1983.

In 1977 he moved into Hospers and had been a resident of the Orange City Health System Long Term Care Unit since November 20, 2005. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church and Reuter Post 0423 American Legion, both in Hospers.

Survivors include three daughters, Carleen Leymaster of Overland Park, Kansas, Mary Ellen and her husband Daniel Scholz of Omaha and Diane and her husband Bruce Barrett of Colorado Springs Colorado; two sons and their wives, Ernest Jr. and Mary Ellen of Des Moines and Dan and Kim of Wichita, Kansas; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Ed (Isabel) Hemmeri of Adrian, Minnesota; two brothers and their wives, Sylvester and Ellen of Adrian and Leo and Agnes of Westbrook, Minnesota; and a brother-in-law, Anton Klein of Adrian. He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Arnold; two sisters, Evelyn Slinger and her husband Walt, and Johanna Klein; and a brother-in-law, Ed Hemmen
