Inwood, IA: Martin Halma, 90, of Inwood, Iowa, died Monday, September 1, 2014 at Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral Service will be Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Reformed Church of Inwood with Rev. Sam Krikke officiating. Burial will follow at Richland Cemetery. Visitation, with family present, will be 5:30-7:30 pm Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Porter Funeral Home of Inwood. Condolences may be left for the family at www.porterfuneralhomes.com.

Martin was born May 8, 1924 in Maurice, Iowa to Harry and Hilda (Miedema) Halma. He graduated from Rock Valley Christian School. Afterwards he worked for various farmers in the area. He served in the United States Army during World War II as a military policeman in Japan from April 1945 to October 1946. On June 1, 1951 he married Ruth DeWit in Inwood, Iowa. Together they farmed and operated a dairy until he retired and moved to town in 1994. He was a faithful member of the Christian Reformed Church in Inwood. He enjoyed spending time on the farm. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was known for his gentle spirit.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Ruth; children, Ron (Judy) Halma of Appleton, Wisconsin; Harlan Halma of Inwood; LeAnn (Kevin) Soldatke of Harrisburg, South Dakota; Jean (Dennis) Boote of Fairview, South Dakota; Verlyn Halma of Rock Valley, Iowa; Lori (Elmer) Boon of Rock Valley; Myron (Sue) Halma of Sioux Center, Iowa; and Dan Halma of Larchwood, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; brothers, George (Ann) Halma, Roger (June) Halma, and Clarence (Connie) Halma, all of Inwood; sisters, Frieda (Bert) Veldkamp of Bellflower, California; Albertha Johnson of Spearfish, South Dakota, and Rena (Don) Cannegieter of Rock Valley; and sisters-in-law, Alice Halma and Judy Halma, both of Inwood.

Martin was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Hilda; infant daughter, Lisa; and three brothers, John, Charlie, and Sam Halma.
