Frances Schuiteman was born on a hot Sunday afternoon, June 7, 1925, on a farm west of Sioux Center to Pleum and Lillian (Van Putten) De Zeeuw. She was the youngest of 6 girls in the family. She grew up on the family farm. She and her twin sister, Freda, were very close despite their differences in looks and personalities. She attended Platte Township country school until 1936 when she moved to Sioux Center and attended grade school and high school in Sioux Center. She graduated from high school in 1943. After graduation, she and her sister boarded a bus to Holland, Michigan where they worked in a plant inspecting ball bearings, which were sent overseas to be used by the servicemen in the war. She also worked at a packing plant in Omaha and tended onion fields in the summer. She needed to work to help support the family. She moved back to Sioux Center in 1945 and taught at Center Township country school until 1948.

Frances married Art Schuiteman on June 7, 1948, after he returned from fulfilling his obligation to the service. They lived in Sioux Center until 1950, and moved to the farm, east of Sioux Center. They faithfully farmed there for 58 years. Together they raised 8 children, all of whom reside in Sioux County. She has 26 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren.

Frances was a very good cook. She faithfully made 5 meals a day – breakfast, lunch, dinner, lunch and supper for many sales men who happened to stop by at meal time and all the hired men. The lunches she packed for the days in the field were enough to feed more than 1 person. Family and friends often requested some of her favorites: potato salad, homemade cookies and bars as well as her chocolate, strawberry and banana cream pies. She usually had a pie crust in the freezer and could put together a pie on short notice. She graciously made pies for her kids and spouses so they could share with coworkers and friends. Over the years, she crocheted around 100+ baby blankets, many which are still in use today. She was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church in Sioux Center.

She is survived by 8 children: Jan and Bev (Vermeer) of Orange City and their four children: Jay (Alissa), Julie (Eric) McDonald, Justin (Angela) and Jonathan; Leon and Karen (Vermeer) of Sioux Center and their two children: Matt (Minde Jo) Abby (Stan) De Zeeuw; Mark and Claryce (Van Roekel) of Sioux Center and their three sons: Corey (Julianne) Craig and Chad; Kirk and Helen (Moffett) of Orange City and their four children: Aaron Schuiteman, Monika Dike, Renate Dike and Christina Dike; Kim and Ken Smit and their four children: Brad (Paige) Smit, Mike (Amy) Smit, Greg Smit, Amy (Eric) Weiler; Kay and Dave Faber of Sioux Center and their three children: Sara (Patrick) Kober, Dan (Brooke) Faber, Tyler Faber; Kyle and Brenda (Vande Brake) of Orange City and their three children: Anthony, Andrew and Breana Schuiteman; Shonna and Brad Borchers of Sioux Center and their three children: Kendra, Chris and Kayla; 31 great grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Helene Schuiteman of Sheldon, IA; three brothers-in-law: Norm De Jongh of Luverne, MN, Bernie Van’t Hul of Sheldon, Adrian Punt of Sioux Center and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Schuiteman; parents, Pleum and Lillian De Zeeuw; 5 sisters and spouses: Edith (Herm) Sietstra, Doris (Herm) Harmelink, Joann (Andrew) Brenneman, Gertrude Punt and twin sister, Freda (Peter) Mouw.

As a family, we are grateful for her love for her family and others, exhibited by her unselfish nature.
