Mrs. Mary Gardner Smith Died at Geneva, Wash., January 17th
Mrs. Mary Gardner Smith, an early day Hawarden resident and sister in law of Mrs. Lewis Smith of Hawarden, passed away at her home in Geneva, Wash., Sunday, Jan. 17th, after a long illness at the age of 72 years. Both Mrs. Smith and her husband spent the greater part of their active years in the teaching profession, serving numerous South Dakota communities, removing to Washington from Burke, S.D. about three years ago. They were residents of Hawarden as young people and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary about a year ago. Mrs. Smith held the degree of Bachelor of Education from the Northern Teachers College at Aberdeen, S.D. and also held a degree from the Cheney Normal School at Cheney, Wash. She was a member of the Presbyterian church and the Order of Easter Star at Chamberlain, S.D.
She is survived by her husband, Alva J. Smith; one son, C. G. Smith, Geneva, Wash; two grandsons; three great grandchildren, and two brothers, J. C. Gardner, Portland, Ore., and F. M. Gardner, Huntington Park, Calif.
Funeral services were held at a funeral home in Bellingham, Wash., on Wednesday of last week with the Eastern Star giving their ritualistic service following the funeral sermon. The remains were cremated.
