Obituary for Henrietta G. Alons

Mrs. Henrietta Alons, age 82, of Hospers, passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2014, at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

There will be a funeral service on Friday, August 29, at 10:30am, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hospers. The Rev. Marvin Leese will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hospers Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Thursday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers.

Henrietta Gertrude was born on August 21, 1932, in Saranac, Michigan, the daughter of Henry and Gertrude (Cleveringa) Duistermars. At the age of seven, her family moved to Sioux Center and eventually, Orange City, where she attended the Christian School and graduated from the Public School.

On March 27, 1951, she married Daniel L. Alons at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. They made their home by Hospers, where she was a homemaker. She also worked as a telephone operator and as a cook at the Hi-way Café in Hospers.

Mrs. Alons was a member of the Hospers Christian Reformed Church, where she belonged to the Golden Hour Circle and served on the flower committee and as a Sunday school teacher.

She was a woman of many talents, including cake decorating, sewing (especially wedding dresses), crocheting (blankets for the grandchildren), oil painting, and playing the piano. She enjoyed reading mystery novels, watching Lawrence Welk, cooking, baking, and flower and vegetable gardening (roses).

Survivors include her husband of more than 63 years, Dan; six children, Gail, and her husband, Randy Grotenhuis, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Loren Alons, and his wife, Reena, of Hospers; Cheryl Morrison, and her friend, Steve Artz, of Doon; Daryl Alons, and his friend, Patti Graeber, of Sioux Falls; Lynn Mark, and her fiancé, Lloyd Webb, of Sheldon; and Ruth, and her husband, Russell Coons, of Ireton; 23 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Larry Van’t Hof; and a brother and four sisters, Katie Lems, Clarence Duistermars, Ruth Wilson, Wilma Franken, and Dorothy Coats.

Memorials will be directed to the church elevator fund and Campus Crusade for Christ for Robyn and Dan Van Roekel.
