Henry Dering, 72, of Hospers died Tuesday, April 23, at the Orange City Municipal Hospital.

Services were Saturday at First Reformed Church of Hospers with Pastor Robert VandeVord and Pastor Robert Hoekstra officiating. Burial was in the Hospers Cemetery.

Dering was born on February 26, 1924, in Chicago, the son of Henry Sr. and Jenny (Vander Laan) Dering. He was graduated from Fenger High School in Chicago in 1942. He served in the Army with General George Patton’s 3rd Army as a staff sergeant of the 178th Ordnance Depot and was discharged in 1945.

He married Joyce Vanderlee on December 15, 1945. They made their home in South Holland, Illinois. He was in the trucking business and also had a nursery and garden center with the greenhouses.

Henry was an active member of First Reformed Church, where he served as a deacon and elder.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Beasley of Duncan, Oklahoma, and Mrs. David (Barbara) DeJong of Hospers; a son, Gary Dering of Puyallup, Washington, and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four infants and three sisters, Henrietta Ettema, Bertha Van Vlymen and Margaret Groustra.
