Mrs. Owen Fagen, who has lived about six miles north of Rock Valley for many years, died Tuesday morning after a long illness. Her husband died some six years ago, and she and one unmarried daughter have made their home together. Besides this daughter she leaves one other daughter to mourn. Funeral services were held in St. Mary's church in this city Thursday morning and interment was made in St. Mary's cemetery. In the absence of Father O'Reilly the mass was celebrated by Father Desmond of Alvord. The many friends of the deceased lady are sorrowing and are extending sympathy to the bereaved daughters.

This may be Mary Fagen, who appears in the 1900 U.S. census as living in Doon Township, just across the Lyon County line from Rock Valley. She was age 60, born Jan. 1840 in Ireland, immigrated to U.S. in 1865, mother of 8 children, 3 (or 5?) living, a farmer; living with daughter Maggie, age 23, born in Iowa Dec. 1876, a schoolteacher, and son Peter, age 19, born in Iowa July 1880.

An online search of the indexes to the 1880 federal census and the Iowa State Census Collection on Ancestry.com did not find a Mary or Owen Fagen living in Lyon or Sioux County. The Fagens are not in the online 1885 census for Doon Township, the adjacent Lyon County townships of Richland and Garfield, or in Rock Township.
