Died: 1925

William J. Griffith, father of Mrs. Emma Osterday of this city and for more than forty years a resident of Ireton, died Saturday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.L. Kersey, in Sioux City, where he had been visiting for the past few weeks. Death was due to the infirmities incident to his advanced years. The remains were brought to Hawarden Saturday night and funeral services were held at the home of Mrs. Osterday at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Edwin Booth Jr., pastor of the Associated Churches. Interment was made in Grace hill Cemetery.

William J. Griffith was born February 12, 1874, was a little past 78 years of age at the time of his death. He was united in marriage at Georgetown, Grant County, Wisconsin February 25, 1866, with Martha Katherine Quick, who has been his companion for more than 59 years and who survives him. On February 25th, last year, they celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary at Ireton with a large family gathering but his illness prevented observance of the 59th anniversary this year. The family came west to Plymouth county in 1883 and shortly afterwards moved to the vicinity of Ireton, thus being numbered among the earliest settlers of that vicinity. They have since continuously resided there. Six children were born to this union, all of whom survive their father. The children are Mrs. Emma Osterday of Hawarden; Mrs. John Edwards of LeMars; Mrs. W.L. Kersey of Sioux City; Mrs. Chas DuVall of Glade Park, Colorado; James Griffith of Maurice, Iowa; and William M. Griffith Glade Park, Colorado. He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

“Dad” Griffith, as he was affectionately called by his many old friends, was also well known to many Hawarden people. He was highly regarded in the community where he had resided for so many years and his familiar figure will be greatly missed at Ireton.

Out of town relatives who were here to attend the funeral included Mr. and Mrs. John Edwards and Mrs. Jesse Edwards of LeMars; Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Kersey, Mrs. B.F. Cooper, Miss Charlotte Walter and Merle Overholser of Sioux City; Albert Griffith of Maurice; and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Chappel of Marshall, Minnesota. One son, William M. Griffith, and one daughter, Mrs. Chas DuVall of Grade park, Colorado, were unable to be present.
