Obituary of William Steinberg, Buried Saturday Afternoon
William Harvey Steinberg was born May 25, 1858, in Will township, Illinois. Fifty years ago, he and his wife moved to Pattersonville, Iowa, the present town of Hull. In a short time his wife's mother, Mrs. Jane Denby, and his own father's family moved here.
Mr. Steinberg farmed for a number of years, and then moved to town, where he bought grain and live stock in the elevator, now known as the Farmer's Co-operative. Being interested in good schools, he was a member of the local board of education for many years. It was largely through his efforts that the fine grounds of our present school site was purchased.
In 1907, the Steinbergs moved to Salem, Oregon. In 1908, much sorrow came into the home. A talented [line blurred] Hull, but in two months time, a son, Larry Lee, and his wife were both taken by typhoid fever, and were brought to Hull for burial.
This left Mr. Steinberg with four young daughters to rear. He gave them all fine educations, and was very proud of their attainments. His daughter, Orrie E., died and was brought to Hull for burial. During the last few years, Mr. Steinberg lived in California during the winter, and then spent the summer in Oregon. He had just returned to Oregon for a few weeks, when he was suddenly taken by a heart attack.
He is survived by three daughters, Amy and Barbara Steinberg, and Mrs. Eugene Hill, two grand-daughters, Barbara Jane and Eleanor Anne Hill of Los Angeles, California and a son Frederick H. of San Francisco, California.
Mr. Steinberg was a man of sterling character and much personality. Everyone who knew him was his friend, and they were many. He enjoyed people, and he will be missed for his cheerful philosophy of life.
His daughter, Amy, brought the father's remains to Hull, Friday, for burial in the family lot in Hope Cemetery. Services were held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, in the Chapel, in charge of Rev. R. A. Jager, of the American Reformed church. Willy Brouwer sang a couple of selections and the pallbearers were Ed. H. [blurred], Wm. E. Shaap, Howard Anderson, G. S. DeMats, Henry [blurred]man, and Jno. B. Mayer. The Index wishes to join in sincere sympathy for the bereaved children.
