Obituary for John A. Van Beek

Mr. John Van Beek, age 95, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2014, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, May 28, at 2:30pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Vande Zande will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. There will be a family prayer service on Wednesday, at 12:45pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Tuesday, with the family present from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the funeral home.

John Albert was born on October 16, 1918, at Orange City, the son of John and Johanna (Sybrandy) Van Beek. He grew up near Orange City.

On December 9, 1947, he married Mathilda Broek in Sioux Center. They lived near Orange City for five years and then moved to Ireton, where they lived for the next 51 years. In Ireton, he was employed by the Farmers Coop Society, where he was manager of their lumber yard for many years. In August of 2004, they moved to the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City. Mathilda passed away on November 18, 2006, after almost 59 years of marriage.

In March of 2013, John became a resident of the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, and in October of 2013, he transferred to Prairie Ridge.

He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church and a former longtime member of the Ireton Christian Reformed Church.

John was a friendly, outgoing man, who enjoyed visiting with people and walking around town. He had a great memory. In the last several years, after losing most of his eyesight, he appreciated his faithful reader, Dawn Jorgensen.

Those left to cherish his memory include his three children, Marilyn, and her husband, Sherwyn Bolkema, and Alan Van Beek, and his wife, Barb, all of Orange City; and Marla Sas, of Hull; seven grandchildren, Shelley, and her husband, Rick Hoogeveen; Brenda, and her husband, Josh Vermeer; Adam Van Beek, and his wife, Marla; Emily Van Beek, and her fiancé, Stephan McClure; Michael Sas, and his wife, Heather; Kevin Sas-Perez, and his wife, Brianna; and Angie Sas; nine great-grandchildren; and a sister and her husband, Darlene and Marlin Wichers, of Orange City.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Dwight Sas; and four sisters and a brother, Tena (Henry Gerritsen and Chris Dekker), Grace (Chris Dekker), Marie (William De Vos), Bernard (Charlene) Van Beek, and Alice Van Beek.
