Obituary: Rock Valley, Iowa: Katherine "Kathy" Boekestein, 86, of Rock Valley, died Saturday, February 15, 2014 at Whispering Heights at Rock Valley. A funeral service will be 11:00 am Wednesday, February 19, 2014 at Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley. Burial will follow the luncheon at Richland Cemetery in Inwood. Visitation will be Tuesday, February 18, 2014 beginning at 4 pm and then with the family present from 6:00-8:00 at Porter Funeral Home. Katherine Boekestein, daughter of Evert and Hendrika (Kuyper) Boekestein, was born July 21, 1927 at Inwood, Iowa. She lived with her parents until they were unable to take care of her and then went to a school at Glenwood, Iowa where her parents hoped she could be helped and taught. In 1963, Kathy came to live at Valley Manor (now Whispering Heights) at Rock Valley where the staff and residents became her family. Kathy helped out at the facility as long as she was able. She loved flowers, being outside, taking walks, French silk chocolate pie, and her coffee. She had special friends including then administrator Al Porter, who encouraged her and made her feel gifted in her own way. Kathy was a life-long member of Inwood Christian Reformed Church.

Kathy is survived by her brother, Art Boekestein; sister-in-law, Frieda (Ed) Boekestein; stepbrother-in-law, Abe J. (Jeanette) Van Roekel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Evert and Hendrika Boekestein; brothers, Gilbert (Ann) Boekestein, Ed Boekestein; sister, Jeannette (Dick) Bouwman; sister-in-law, Bertha Boekestein.
