Mrs. Laura Woodward, a resident of Hawarden for many years, passed away at her home just before midnight last Wednesday. Mrs. Woodward suffered a heart attack last December from which she did not fully recover. She was bedfast but three weeks preceding her death.
Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Baptist church, with Rev. J. H. Flaming officiating. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery.
Laura Mildred Jackson was born at West Lima, Wisconsin, May 22, 1869, and passed away April 26, 1944, having attained the age of 74 years, 11 months and 4 days. When a small child, she came to Iowa with her parents, who settled at McGregor. Later, moved to Otranto Station near Mason City and when about 14 years of age she went to Esmond, S.D.
She was united in marriage at Esmond with James Robert Wooward on December 4, 1887, and four years later they came to Hawarden to make their home. She lived her continuously until 1926, when her husband passed away. After his death, she spent much time with her daughter, Mrs. Hugh Page at Hot Springs, S.D. Mrs. Page died in 1933 and after that she lived with another daughter, Mrs. Chas. Fleming in the Black Hills region. In 1935, she returned to Hawarden and the following year Mr. and Mrs. Fleming came to live with her and help care for her.
She is survived by four children, Mrs. Chas. Fleming and Paul Woodward of Hawarden, and Mrs. Clarence Best and Mrs. Victor Templar of Sioux City; two sisters, Mrs. C.M. Kline of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. M.A. Chase of Logan, Okla., and one brother, Ward Jackson of Custer, S.D. There are 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
She was a member of the Hawarden Baptist church and an ardent supporter when her health permitted, and of the Martha chapter of the Eastern Star of Hot Springs, S.D.
Out of town relatives and friends who attended the funeral on Saturday were Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Best, Mr. and Mrs. Victor Templar and daughter, Wanda, Mr. and Mrs. James Smith, Miss Margaret Peterson, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kress, Mrs. and Mrs. C.E. Gear, Mrs. Emma Perlins, Mrs. Opal Perkins and Mrs. Nellie Reiser of Sioux City.
