Garrett Starkenburg, age 81, of Alton, died Thursday, January 13, 1994 at his residence.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the Alton Reformed Church. The Rev. Roger Voskuil officiated. Interment followed at Nassau Township Cemetery near Alton under direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City.

Garrett was born Feb. 19, 1912 at Volga, S.D. the son of Sjored and Catherine (Van Laar) Starkenburg. He graduated from the Alton High School. He lived in California many years, returning to Alton about 1975.

Mr. Starkenburg was employed as a dock worker with P.I.E. Truck Lines. He was a member of the Alton Reformed Church.

Survivors include a brother, William of Alton; a sister, Dorothy Root of Bellflower, California; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, George (in infancy), John and Fred; and two sisters, Ollie Brower and Arlene Castle.
