Died: July 10, Sheldon, Iowa

John A. Van Wyk Sr. 93, Sheldon, formerly of Sanborn, died Saturday, July 10, 2004 at Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.

Services were Tuesday, July 13, at the First Reformed Church in Sanborn. Burial was at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn, under the direction of Sanborn Funeral Home.

John Van Wyk Sr.,son of Arie and Jennie (Vander Wilt) Van Wyk, was born March 4, 1911. He lived his youth in the Newkirk and Orange City areas. He began his education at Newkirk and continued in Orange City, where he graduated from Orange City Academy. He married Coba Humme on Feb. 24, 1937, at her parents home in Hull. They lived northwest of Sheldon for two years and then moved Northwest of Boyden for three years. They farmed northwest of Sanborn for 34 years. They moved to their home in Sheldon in 1977. Mrs. Van Wyk died March 21, 1990. He married Elizabeth Kollis on Feb. 27, 1993. She died Jan. 11, 1996. He later moved to Sheldon, where he resided at the Christian Retirement Home, Fieldcrest Assisted Living and Northwest Iowa Health Care Center. He was a member of First Reformed Church in Sanborn and the Gideons. Special interests of his included fishing and playing horseshoes.

Survivors include his children, Arlan and Neva Van Wyk of Sheldon, daughter-in-law, Gert Van Wyk of Sheldon, Kenneth and Diane Van Wyk of Spirit Lake, Nelva Jean and the Rev. Chuck Kleinhesselink of Everson, Washington, and John Jr. and Judy Van Wyk of Sanborn; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a brother, Gilbert Van Wyk of Bellflower, CA; and two sisters, Irene Vellinga of Orange City and Leola Te Grotenhuis of Orange City.

He was preceded in death by his two wives, Coba and Elizabeth Van Wyk; a son, Dennis Van Wyk; a granddaughter, Jenna Kleinhesselink; a great-grandson, Reid Christopher Van Wyk; a brother, Mitchell Van Wyk; and two sisters, Sophia De Graaff and Greta Veld.
