Margaret "Mike" Kooi, 63, of rural Sioux Center, IA, died of Leukemia on Friday, November 14, 1997, at her residence. Services were held on Monday morning, November 17, 1997, at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center, the Reverend Dale Visser officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens Cemetery, under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

"Mike" was born July 15, 1934, near Sioux Center, the daughter of Theodore and Alice (Schut) Kaemingk. She attended rural grade school at West Branch #4, and graduated from Sioux Center High School. She was employed at the Sioux Center News for four years. She was united in marriage with Bill Kooi on November 18, 1955, at Sioux Center. They lived in Sioux Center for several years, and then moved to the Kooi family farm north of Ireton, IA, where they lived for 35 years. In 1991, they moved to an acreage south of Sioux Center. She was a member of Lebanon Christian Reformed Church. She served on the board for the Sioux County unit of the American Cancer Society, and was a volunteer for Bethany Christian Services, Mothers of Preschoolers, and Domestic Violence.

Survivors include her husband, Bill; four daughters and their husbands, Vivian and Jerry Keene of North Muskegon, MI, Sheryl and Kelly Hulstein of Sioux Center, Cinda and Randy Vande Griend of Salem, OR, and Sheresa and Mike Nieuwsma of Eagan, MN; four sons and their wives, Keith and Bonnie of Sioux Center, Myron and Bev of Norfolk, NE, Kevin and Mauritta of North Muskegon, MI, and John and Susan of Sioux Center; a sister, Wilemina A. Schuiteman of Sioux Center; two brothers, Harold and Tunis, both of Sioux Center; two sisters-in-law, Helen Kaemingk and Raven and her husband Gerrit De Zeeuw, all of Sioux Center; 20 grandchildren; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandson, Kyle Kristopher Hulstein; and two brothers, Arnold and Theodore. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, Sioux Center Hospital, Hospice, Juvenile Diabetes, or the Michigan PKU Association.
