Porter Funeral Home Obituary

Obituary: Ireton, Iowa- Myrna Mae Vander Hamm, 86, of Ireton, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at the Hillcrest Health Care Services in Hawarden.

Funeral Service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church rural Ireton, with Rev. David Daumer officiating. Burial will follow in the St. John’s Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Friday with the family present beginning at 6 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Ireton. Myrna Mae Vander Hamm, the daughter of Robert and Edna (Kading) Vander Hamm, was born January 29, 1928 at the family farm home near Ireton, Iowa. She was Baptized, Confirmed and a lifelong member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church rural Ireton. In her youth she was a youth counselor at the Lutheran Youth Camp in Okoboji, Iowa. Myrna also worked at a cap sewing factory and later did a lot of housekeeping jobs for many friends in the local area.

Myrna took care of her mother and brother during their illnesses until their passing. She was well known for her large gardens and her large potato patches, and also for the best pickles she would make and her home baked cookies. Myrna was a long time blood donor, donating over 17 gallons.

She lived on the century family farm all of her life, until the last week and a half where she was a patient in the Hawarden Regional Healthcare Hospital, and the last 5 days at Hillcrest Health Care Services. She passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 29, 2014 at Hillcrest at the age of 86 years.

Survivors are her brother, Wallace (LaVonne) Vander Hamm of Ireton; two sisters, Marian Moeller of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Joan Osterkamp of Alcester, South Dakota; 15 nieces and nephews; and many cousins and friends.
Those who preceded her in death were her parents; a sister, Mildred Moeller; brother, Wilbur Vander Hamm; and three brothers-in-law, Marlin Moeller, Melvin Moeller, and Ed Osterkamp.
