Byron Allan Koerselman, 53, of Maurice died unexpectedly Monday, August 25, while working in Le Mars. Services were 10:30 a.m. Friday at Maurice First Reformed Church, with the Rev. Wayne Sneller officiating. Burial was in Sherman Township Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Pressman-Kosters Post 329 of Orange City.Koerselman was born April 14, 1955, in Rock Rapids, the son of Benjamin and Anna Mae (Van De Vegte) Koerselman. As a young child, the family moved to Merrill, where he attended grade school. He graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1974. Following high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, attending basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He also trained there as a heavy equipment mechanic. After four years of service to his country, he transferred to the Iowa Army National Guard for the completion of his enlistment. He worked for a number of years as a mechanic for Ernie Eason in Orange City. He later joined his father, Ben Koerselman, and learned the trade of floor covering installation. He worked as an independent installer for nearly 30 years.
He married Mary Schwarz June 11, 1994, in Bradley, South Dakota. The couple made their home in Maurice for the last several years. He loved the outdoors. In the fall and winter months, he enjoyed bow hunting and in the summer months, he enjoyed camping and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; three daughters from a previous marriage, April of Brookings, South Dakota, Tricia of Willmar, Minnesota, and Heidi and her daughter Tayler of Marshall, Minnesota; his mother, Anna Mae Koerselman of Merrill; two sisters and their husbands,
Sharon and Robert Niessink of Anchorage, Alaska, and Debra and Randy Lewis of Adel; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and friends.He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Koerselman, on March 30, 2005; his father-in-law, Marvin Schwarz; and a brother-in-law, Keith Schwarz.
