Rudolph “Rudy” Winterfeld, 96, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Sioux Center and Rock Valley, Iowa, died Thursday, February 14, 2002, at Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls.

Services will be 2 P.M. Monday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Hills of Rest Cemetery in Sioux Falls. Visitation will begin at 10 A.M. Sunday, with the family present 2 to 4 P.M. at Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls.

Mr. Winterfeld was born September 23, 1905, on a rural homestead near Rock Valley, Iowa, the son of Henry F. and Amelia (Rentschler) Winterfeld. He was baptized and confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Sioux Center, Iowa. He married Bertha Gayer on January 30, 1929.

He farmed in the Sherman, South Dakota and Luverne, Minnesota areas until his retirement in 1948. He helped start the Rural Electric Association in Minnesota when getting electricity to the rural area. Following his retirement they moved to Sioux Falls, Bertha died October 15, 1960.

He married Audrey Olmstead Benson on December 2, 1963, in Truman, Minnesota. He was an outdoorsman, spending a lot of time hunting and fishing. He also bowled and traveled whenever he could. He was Minnesota Twins fan and enjoyed going and listening to baseball games.

He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church since 1948, and helped move the church from the airbase to the first original chapel.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife; a stepson and his wife, Norman and Karen Benson of Norwalk, California; stepchildren, Candice and her husband, Stanley Sakioka of Whittier, California, Brian and his wife, Donna Benson of Lemoore, California, Lori and her husband, Robert James of Norwalk, Cheryl and her husband, Randy Autry of Palmdale, California, and Joni and her husband, Rodney Poole of Fontana, California; 18 great-step grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Marie Winterfeld of Sioux Center; and a host of other relatives and friends.
