Obituary: Nathalie Schiefen, 82, of Hawarden, Iowa died Thursday, September 05, 2013 at her home surrounded by the love of her family. The funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Monday, September 9, 2013 at the Associated Church in Hawarden with Rev. Dan Lozer officiating. Burial will follow at the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 8, 2013 with a prayer service at 4:00 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 5:30 p.m. at Porter Funeral Home. Nathalie Joan was born January 27, 1931 to Hilton and Dorothy (Naeve) Sonichsen in Alcester, South Dakota. She graduated from Elk Point High School in 1949. Two years later Nathalie married Joseph Schiefen on December 25, 1951. In her early years, Nathalie worked as a telephone operator. After the birth of her children, she worked at the Hawarden Bakery, cafeteria at KProducts, and the deli at the grocery store. She also owned and operated the Plain and Fancy Restaurant, washed and delivered diapers for the diaper service and catered out of her home.

Nathalie was heavily involved in the Senior Companion Program and a member of the Associated Church where she participated in various church committees. She had a strong interest in politics and watching late night television while eating popcorn. Nathalie enjoyed her 3:30 p.m. coffee group, gardening, flowers, cooking, baking, crocheting and visiting with family and friends.

Nathalie is survived by her four daughters, Patricia (Brian) Duncan of Elkhorn, NE, Linda (Victor) Grdina of Lincoln, NE, Jolayne (Gary) Witt of Hawarden, IA, and Margaret (Tom) Stine of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren, Elizabeth, David, and Michael Emerson, Calvin and Elly Duncan, Christan (Chris) Ford, Rory (Kelly) Witt, Tori Grdina, and Mary and Abigail Stine; three great-grandchildren, Carter, Camden, and Cale; brother, Roger (Caren) Sonichsen of Hawarden; special friends, Ron and Millie Sorlye; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, and brother, Jim Sonichsen.
