Mr. Derck Winkle, Sioux Center’s oldest citizen, passed away at the home of his daughter Mr. and Mrs. Henry Vander Weerd early Monday morning, December 18, 1944. He had reached the age of 95 years, 11 months.

He is survived by his five children Peter Winkle of Sioux City, George of Sioux Center, Dick of Sherman, South Dakota, Mrs. Henry Vander Weerd of Sioux Center and Mrs. Johanna Brands of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Also 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 1:30 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Vander Weerd, with the Rev. Oliver Breen officiating. Burial will take place at the local cemetery.

Mr. Winkle was born in Veessen, Holland on December 27, 1848, and came to America in the year of 1861 living in this community for the past 58 years. He was united in marriage to Dirkje Bos in the year of 1879 and she preceded him in death passing away on the 29th of September 1916. He was also preceded in death by a daughter who died at the age of three years and a grandson, Dick Vander Weerd who passed away two years ago at the age of 13 years.

He made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Vander Weerd since 1920 and in his earlier days was a shoemaker by trade.
