Arlene Elizabeth, 79, of Avon, Connecticut, and Fory Meyers, Florida, died Wednesday, January 3, at home in Florida.

Services were Saturday, January 6, at 10 A.M. at Vincent Funeral Home in Canton, Connecticut, with Pastor John Wilmarth officiating. Burial will be in West Cemetery, Harwinton.

Mrs. Winterson was born May 13, 1921, in Sioux Center, the daughter of Gerrit and Elizabeth (Jongewaard) De Mots. She graduated from Morningside College and University of Iowa. She served in the U.S. Navy as a WAVE during World War II.

She was a member of the Harwinton Congregation Church and a longtime volunteer at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, where she had served on the board of governors. She actively and generously supported programs for children and for persons with mental retardation.

Survivors include her husband, Howard M. Winterson; a daughter, Christine “Tina” Winterson of Grand Rapids, Michigan; three sons and daughter-in-law, John M. and Anne Winterson of Wallingford, Connecticut, Warren and Jane Winterson of West Point, Virginia, and Howard Jr. and Susan Winterson of Canton, Connecticut; and 10 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Jane Eva; and a brother, Glenn.

Memorials are directed to Resident Assistance Fund of Westwood Cottage, Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, 300 68th Street, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49508.
