Sioux Center News September 6, 1934

Everyone was shocked to hear of the sudden death of Cornelius Bouwkamp who passed away Friday night of a heart attack following a day's illness. Mr. Bouwkamp was bothered with stomach trouble Thursday night and did not work Friday. His condition did not seem serious but at about 7pm Friday night he suffered a heart attack and passed away twenty minutes later. He was only 54 years old.

Mr. Bouwkamp had been living in this community for nearly twenty-one years. All this time he had spent as a farmer, maintaining a dairy for many years. He was born in the Netherlands and came to America when two years old. He made his home first in Muskegon, Mich., and then in Grand Rapids, Mich., where he worked in a furniture factory for about 15 years. Here also he was married. That was thirty years ago. In 1914 the Bouwkamp family moved to Sioux Center and have made this town their home ever since.

Besides his widow Mr. Bouwkamp is survived by five sons, Jay, John, William, Clarence, and Lawrence, the youngest being twelve years old; his father, Jacob Bouwkamp and three brothers, Lammert, Henry, Thomas, all of Grand Rapids., and three sisters Mrs. Nellie Heyboer, Mrs. Louis Huls, and Mrs. Joe Brom all of Grand Rapids. All but his father, and his brother Lammert and sisters Mrs. Henry Bouwkamp and Mrs. Brom were present at the funeral.

Two of Mrs. Bouwkamps's sisters, and two brothers, all from Michigan were also present at the funeral service. They were Mrs. Thomas Gordan of South Haven, Mrs. William Weibenga, Jerry Johnson, and Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson, all of Grand Rapids.

Services were held Tuesday afternoon at the home and at the First Christian Reformed Church with the Rev. J.M. Dykstra and Weibenga of Ireton officiating. Internment was in the local cemetery.

Mrs. Bouwkamp and her sons plan to continue the dairy for the present at least.
