Biography

Mrs. Marie Wallinga, age 87, of Hull, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, August 29, 2013, at the Avera McKennan Hospital and University Health Center in Sioux Falls., South Dakota.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, Sepetember 2, at 10:30am, at the American Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Steven Bierly will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation will be after 5:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Marie Margie was born on May 10, 1926, in Hills, Minnesota, the daughter of Ben and Margie (De Ruyter) Van Hulzen. She was raised in the Hills area, where she graduated from high school. She also attended the Long Beach Secretarial College in California.

On January 22, 1948, she married Henry Joseph Wallinga in Hills. They farmed at Hull for about ten years and then moved into Hull. Although Marie did various part-time work, she was mainly a homemaker. Henry passed away on July 9, 1989, in Sioux Falls, after more than 41 years of marriage.

Mrs. Wallinga was a member of the American Reformed Church. She enjoyed quilting, making a quilt for each grandchild. She was known as Cinnamon Roll Grandma and had them hot from the oven every Saturday morning. She didn’t like to see things go to waste and was generous with her prayers. She prayed every night for each one of the family members and often fell asleep in prayer.

Survivors include her four sons and their wives, Charles “Chuck” and Rhonda Wallinga, of Adrian, Oregon; Dennis and Judy Wallinga, of Sioux Falls; Warren and Mary Wallinga, of Sheldon; and Wayne and Sandy Wallinga, of Spearfish, South Dakota; twelve grandchildren and their spouses, Cathy and Shane Summers, Deanna and Ron Storer, Julie and Joe Sundquist, Chad Wallinga, Marissa Bauscher, Justin Wallinga, Sara Wallinga, Derek Wallinga, Katie and Travis Brockshus, Rob Wallinga, Tashia Wallinga, and Elly Wallinga; eleven great-grandchildren; and a special friend and “guardian angel”, Burdette Oelrich, of Hull.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gerrit Van Hulzen; and three sisters, Henrietta Van Engen, Margaret Rietkerk, and Marge Buys.
