Orange City IA 21 Aug 1884 (her death date)

The De Volksvriend Aug 27, 1884

Orange City IA 21 Aug 1884 (her death date)
This evening about 10 hours died at the age of 71 years and more than 6 months the Widow Cs. Mouw, born Peters.

The deceased was in Zutphen, Ned. born and lived in her youth in Epe, Gelderland. After her marriage the couple went to live in Elspeet, Gelderland. The birthplace of Mr. Cs. Mouw.

Fifteen years ago, the couple moved from the Netherlands and came to America where they settled in Pennsylvania, and where a year later in Archipel (Archipelago) where the house father was buried 12 November. (1869?) More than 13 years ago, she arrived in our colony with her children, from whom at present four sons and two daughters are alive.

For about six weeks, the deceased became very ill and fell into ill health. In the last days the rumor was that she improved some. Herself, however, she didn’t think to last many days anymore. A few weeks ago she said to her son Peter Mouw it was her great consolation, that the Lord such a strayed sheep still has to look up, (upon her) and every time she came back to this. This is a great comfort for the children, all with heartfelt love to her attached. (bound)

She died after a short agony in the arms of her daughter Grietje , the wife of Marinus Rouwenhorst.

We express the family our heartfelt condolences and rejoice that they do not need to stare after their mother, as those who have no hope.

The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon. Gathering in the Ger. Church at two hours.

Jim Mouw of Salem SC had given this account of the early years of the Mouw family in the USA. I am developing the Mouw history on Ancestry.com. My GG grandfather, Cornelis (Cornelius/Kornelis/Kornelius) Mouw, came to the US with his son, Pieter, the summer of 1869 after departing the Netherlands on 18 Jun 1869. On arriving in the US, location unknown, he and his son worked their way to PA on the railroad. His wife, Johanna Margaretha, joined him with their other children after departing the Netherlands 25 Sep 1869. The obituary of Johanna, who died in Orange City, IA on 21 Aug 1884, states that Cornelis was killed in a mine accident after being stomped by a horse or mule at "Archipel, PA" and buried on 12 Nov....either 1869 or 1870. I have been unable to locate Archipel in PA and believe that it is a misspelling of Archbald.

I would appreciate any info you might have on Cornelis Mouw regarding exact date of death and location of burial, contact Wilma J. Vande Berg with info on this event)
